Book Review: Oracle SQL Developer 2.1
I have always been a great fan of Allround Automations' PL/SQL Developer, which is in essence, a similar product to Oracle's SQL Developer. Having been invited to review Sue Harper's book; Oracle SQL Developer 2.1, I was keen to learn the comparisons and features of the Oracle product, and whether the book would inspire me to convert to SQL Developer.
The installation was certainly a breeze allowing me to be up and running within minutes.
As the Oracle database grows in complexity, SQL Developer has provided the Oracle Developer the ability to embrace all the supported features. Sue's book provides a step by step approach allowing developer's of all skill levels to become productive very quickly. Another key point is the structure of the book, allowing the reader to pinpoint certain topics of interest or reference.
From the early versions of Oracle SQL Developer, version 2.1 has certainly moved on, providing numerous tools and features that do not exist in other related products. But of course, I am not here to offer feedback on the product, just the book!
As complex as the product is, the book describes each feature in an easy to understand manner. The heavy use of screenshots throughout the publication, illustrates the use of a busy interface beautifully.
My favourite chapter is "SQL and PL/SQL Tuning Tools", particularly the section on "Inspecting SQL trace files". This is one area that can prove difficult to setup and analyse. However, the powerful tools are well described with examples that prove invaluable in practice.
The summary paragraph at the end of each chapter provides not only a recap on the topics covered, but also an insight into what's coming up in the next chapter.
As a comprehensive user guide plus more, Oracle Developer 2.1 is an essential companion for the discerning Oracle Developer or DBA.
